Baby, It's Cold Outside: Staying Warm in Lolita Fashion

Seasons change. If you are a Lolita like me and located in a similar hemisphere as Northern New England, the autumn chill is here! Cooler weather doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your frilly fashion style. Here are my quick five tips on how to stay warm while wearing lolita fashion!

1. Sweater Cutsews

Picture
Pair a warm cutsew with your JSK or skirt! A sweater, with its close weave and long sleeves, will help you from losing body heat. A cutsew helps add warmth to your coord without the bulk of a traditional sweater. Many lolita brands, including indie brands, have similar shirts for colder temperatures. Many of the warmer cutsews are turtlenecks, which is even better! No matter wool or fleece, a fall or winter cutsew is a perfect way to stay toasty!

2. Boleros & Cardigans

Multiple layers are a wonderful way to stay warm! A bolero-style sweater or cardigan can be worn over your blouse, cutsew, jumperskirt, and even over a one-piece! This additional layer is also perfect for uncertain temperatures. I love to wear a bolero or cardigan as the seasons change. If it gets too warm, I can easily remove the extra layer. Not only is this an option to keep you warm, but it's also a great way to add additional cuteness to your look!

3. Capes, Jackets and Coats

A wool cape, jacket, or coat is a wonderful, if not obvious way, to keep you toasty in lolita! From brand names to lolita indie brands, these lolita essentials are easy to find. Which option would work best for where you live? I love to use a cape for fall and mild winter days, while a winter coat is perfect for more frigid weather. You can pair a more simplistic cape, jacket, or coat, with a faux fur collar for extra sweetness!

4. Tights and OTKs

Use lolita legwear to your advantage! Printed tights are a great way to cover your legs and add some pop to your coordinate. Many brands, especially Taobao brands, release autumn or winter tights for the colder months. Need some extra warmth? Put a pair or leggings or tights with some OTKs! Printed tights with some solids socks, or solid tights with printed socks, will give you added protection against the cold. Adding boot warmers is another cute way to layer your legwear, too!

5. Boots

Picture
As a Sweet Lolita, I completely understand that open shoes, like Tea Parties, are a common staple. This style of shoe lets us show off more of our cute socks or tights. The open design, however, can backfire in cooler weather. Boots help to keep your feet and ankles warm. The best part? You don't have to sacrifice any sweetness! Ideally, I'd like to own both a pair of boots with faux fur lining for winter and an unlined pair for autumn.

What are some of the ways you stay warm in lolita? Do you own specific seasonal items? What about some lesser-known pieces, like winter petticoats? I'd love to know!
