The exhibit began with a large introduction on a wall. This introduction explained the difference between Normative Cute, Applied Cute, and Meta Cute. Who knew? These definitions helpful later! "Normative Cute illustrates the science and nature of cute and describes why it is so much a part of human (and animal) nature. Applied Cute sheds light on how cute aesthetics are employed in design, architecture and fashion. Meta Cute or “beyond” cute explores how cute, combined with other aesthetics, can create meaningful art that can be ironic, disturbing, political, joyous humorous and provocative." - Illustration Institute The exhibit featured items from all three categories. There were pieces that I immediately thought were cute. Other art installments produced an uncanny vibe. I love the unique materials used! The first room featured many illustrations, paintings, and mounted sculptures. I was especially fond of the installments listed above. I could see the oil paintings in my apartment easily! So adorable. The next room had an adorable setup. Guests, most children, we're encouraged to draw something cute to add to the wall. My friend and I participated! She drew an adorable teapot and me an anime girl. This was a fun activity to break up the heavy exhibits, such as the cute political comics. The piece above was one of my favorites! There were small dolls, made from numerous materials. of famous women. The Marie Antoinette doll was my favorite. I wish we could have seen them closer! The last room was the most fun! We entered to see a wide room with bright colors, vintage fashion, and TONS of fun toys! Admittedly, I really wanted the knitted cat sweater and ice cream bag. It was great to see all the vintage toys and books. There were even ones I recognized! As with the rest of the items in the exhibit, there were some adorable things and some questionable ones. The fact that everything was presented together was a great way to present all three cute aesthetics. The last part of the show featured a sweet treat and tea! I love how colorful and whimsical these two pieces are. I am sure this finale inspired our trip to a local cafe afterward! The event was great! Have you attended any great museum exhibit's lately? I'd love to read your comments!
